When planning a new pool, one of the first questions is usually:
How big can we go? But a better question might be: How big should we go?
The largest pool that physically fits in your backyard isn't necessarily the pool that will work best for your home or lifestyle. The right pool should feel proportional to the space, give you enough room for the way you want to use it and still allow the rest of your backyard to function.

How Will You Use Your Pool?
Before thinking about measurements, think about what you want your summers to look like. Will the pool mainly be somewhere for the kids to swim and play? Do you have a large family? Do you regularly entertain? Are you looking for somewhere to exercise, or do you picture yourself relaxing in the water with a drink at the end of the day?
A family wanting plenty of swimming space will naturally have different requirements to a couple wanting a beautiful pool as part of an outdoor entertaining area.
Knowing why you want a pool is often the best place to start when determining how much pool you actually need.
Small Backyard? Don't Rule Out a Pool
You don't need an enormous backyard to have a beautiful pool.
Our range includes compact and plunge pool options starting from just 2.90 metres, making it possible to incorporate a pool into spaces where a traditional large swimming pool simply wouldn't work. A smaller pool can also be an intentional design choice rather than a compromise... For homeowners who want to retain more room for landscaping, lawn, an alfresco, outdoor furniture or entertaining, choosing a more compact pool can create a much better balance across the entire backyard.
With thoughtful positioning and landscaping, a small pool can still make a huge impact.
And If You Have the Space... Go Big!
At the other end of the scale, our fibreglass range extends up to an impressive 12.15 metres! Larger pools can be fantastic for families, bigger properties and clients who genuinely want swimming space. They can also work exceptionally well on rural and lifestyle properties where the scale of the surrounding land can accommodate something more substantial. The key is proportion!
A pool should work with its surroundings rather than feeling either lost within the property or overwhelming the backyard.
It's Not Just About Length
When comparing pools, don't focus solely on the length.
Width, shape, entry points, steps, benches and the internal swimming area can all change how spacious a pool actually feels and how you'll use it. Two pools with a similar overall length can offer very different experiences. You may prefer long, clean lines and plenty of uninterrupted swimming space, or perhaps generous steps, splash decks and seating are more important to you. This is why looking through the different shapes and configurations within our range can be just as important as deciding on a particular measurement.
How Much Backyard Do You Want Left?
This is one of the most important questions... and one that's easily overlooked when you're excited about choosing a pool. Your backyard still needs to work around the pool.
Think about what you'd like to retain or create:
Do you want lawn for children or pets? Somewhere for sun lounges? An outdoor dining area? Gardens? Space for entertaining? A pathway around the pool?
Filling every available metre with pool can leave very little room to actually enjoy the area surrounding it. Sometimes reducing the pool size slightly can give you considerably more flexibility with the overall backyard design.
Consider the Pool's Position
Finding the right size also means finding the right position.
During our onsite quoting process, we'll look at your yard and discuss where you would ideally like the pool to sit, while also considering what's actually possible on the property. Things such as boundaries, easements, fencing requirements, existing structures, access, machinery and crane access can influence the available space and pool positioning. We'll also consider how the pool relates to your home and existing outdoor areas. Ideally, the finished pool should feel connected to the house rather than simply occupying whatever space was available.
Don't Forget About the Surrounds
The measurements of the pool shell aren't the only measurements that matter.
You'll also need space around the pool for coping, concrete or paving, fencing, landscaping and comfortable movement throughout the area.
This is where planning the entire outdoor space from the beginning becomes particularly valuable. We can look beyond the dimensions of the pool itself and consider how the pool and surrounding landscape will work together.

Your pool doesn't necessarily have to do everything.

There isn't one ideal pool size.
A 2.90 metre plunge pool can be absolutely perfect for one property, while another family may make full use of a 12.15 metre pool.
Between those two ends of the range, there are plenty of different lengths, widths, shapes and configurations to explore. That's why we don't believe choosing a pool should simply be about finding the biggest shell that will fit.
